Kitagawa Utamaro (ca. 1753-1806) - Lot 449
Kitagawa Utamaro (ca. 1753-1806) Oban tate-e, awabi fisherwoman and child. Signed Utamaro hitsu upper right. Later print. Stains, soiling, missing, cut margins. Size 38 x 24.7 cm. The original plate for this illustration dates from 1798; the theme of female awabi (abalone) fisherwomen was frequently used in prints and netsuke alike, as a means of expressing female nudity, which was then prohibited in another form by the censors.
