RUSSIA, 18th century. - Lot 307
RUSSIA, 18th century. Miraculous apparition of the Virgin to the bishop Prokhor or Virgin of Tolga II. Oil on panel, exceptional icon on gold background. 35 x 27,5 cm. (Some small chips and minor retouching) In 1314, Bishop PROKHOR, making a long journey to LAROSLAVL, stopped for the night on the banks of the Volga. A bridge allowing access to the other bank appeared in a halo. The tradition reports that the bishop, after having borrowed this one, had a vision of the Virgin holding the Child Jesus in her arms, so highly placed that she was not reachable. Upset by this apparition, the clergyman left, forgetting his crosier. The next day, he ordered that they go and look for him, instead his servants found an icon of the Virgin. The bishop PROKHOR had a wooden church erected the same day, which he dedicated to the feast of the Presentation of Mary in the temple, and then, due to the influx of pilgrims, a monastery known as TOLGA was built. Nowadays, the miraculous icon known as TOLGA II (several variants exist) is kept in the monastery of TOLGA, which became a convent for women. On the right is represented the bishop PROKHOR while he is higoumen of the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the SAVIOR OF LAROSLAVL. St. Theodore of SMOLENSK and his sons Constantine, Basil and David wearing precious royal vestments and ermine coats, hands raised, faces turned towards the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, stand in an attitude of Adoration.
