RUSSIA, 19th century. - Lot 306
RUSSIA, 19th century. Icon of the Mother of God called "With three hands". Oil on panel. 35,5 x 31,5 cm. (Some repaints on the lower border, small chips and tiny crack) The origin of this icon goes back to the VIIIth century when the emperor Leo III the Isaurian wishing to spread heresy, ordered the destruction of the holy images. Then great defender of the cult of icons and minister of the Caliph, St. John Damascene is the victim of a plot fomented by the emperor who wishes to compromise him with the Caliph, resulting in the sentence of having his hand cut off. The saint addresses the Virgin and presents his limb: "Most pure Virgin Mary who gave birth to my God, you know why my right hand was cut off, you can, please, give it back to me and join it to my arm. I beg you for this grace so that I may use it from now on to write the praises of your Son and yours. Appearing during his sleep and performing a miracle, she replied: "You are now cured, compose hymns, write my praises, thus fulfilling your promise. In gratitude, Saint John had a third hand placed on this icon as an ex-voto. Some repaints on the lower border, small chips and tiny crack on the mantle of the child Jesus.
