Russian school of the 19th century - Lot 309
Russian school of the 19th century Icon of the Mother of God of Tenderness or Eleousa Oil on panel 43,7 x 37,2 cm. (Some small chips and repaints) In a gesture of tenderness, the Child Jesus is holding the neck of the Virgin with one hand, holding the edge of her cloak with the other. The Virgin, head bowed, points with her right hand to "Christ" to the faithful, an attitude also used in the representation of icons called "Who shows the way". The most famous representation of this type of icon is the Virgin of Tenderness of Vladimir. Beautiful treatment of the faces on a background of leafy scrolls with traces of silvering on the garment of the Child Jesus and the borders.
