School of CUZCO XVIIIth century. - Lot 13
School of CUZCO XVIIIth century. The flight in Egypt. Oil on canvas mounted on panel. 35 x 46cm. (Some wear and cracks) This representation of the flight into Egypt is distinguished by the characteristics of the school of Cuzco in the 18th century, home of production of the mestizo art made by Peruvian artists: absence of perspective, colors with dominant red, ocher and brown enhanced by the gold "brocateado" that surrounds the characters, presence of exotic birds in trees and the basket of St. Joseph. Adorned with earrings, the Virgin, who is breastfeeding, travels seated on a sambue, giving the scene a solemn character; the representation of the angel guiding the donkey illustrates the predominance of the sacred. The theme of this painting can be compared in its composition to the work of Brother Francisco SALAMANCA (1660-1737) who decorated the walls of his cell in the Convent of the Misericordia in CUZCO with thirty-seven painted panels, with subjects inspired by the Flemish prints that were circulating in Latin America at the time.
