Queen Marie Antoinette (1755-1793). Piece of dress in brown and ivory silk plumetis, embroidered with small circles in white, sky blue, and blue cotton thread. 15 x 9 cm. With its note of provenance in pen (small lacks): "This paper contains a morc...of a sleeve of a dress of the unfortunate Marie Antoinette Queen of France. This precious souvenir is in the hands of my family since the death of Madame de Montaigu daughter of the Duke of Noailles died in Rolle Canton of Vaud. Presented in a later frame, A.B.E. Provenance: -Anne Paule Dominique de Noailles (1766-1839), married to Joachim de Montaigu, was the daughter of Jean Paul de Noailles, Duke of Ayen. Her sister Adrienne married the Marquis de La Fayette. Private collection. History: The three daughters of the Duc d'Ayen, Mesdames de La Fayette, de Montaigu and de Grammont, and their nephew M. Alexis de Noailles, had sought refuge in Rolle (a small town in the canton of Vaud) during the revolutionary turmoil. She also resided in Brussels and it was there that she learned of the Queen's death: "Mme de Montagu also learned with deep emotion of the Queen's death, which completed the great mourning of royalty."
